Canon Information

History: Here's quite a wiki page!

Personality: On the outside, Jecht is arrogant almost to the point of being a jerk. Years of blitzball stardom have clearly gone to his head, and he never ceases to remind anyone (his son included) that no one can match his performance at the game or the skills he has to win. This isn't unjustified -- he DID create his own (entirely overpowered) shot, and he knew how to work a crowd, as evinced by his skillful marketing of said shot as "Mark III" to lure crowds in to see a nonexistent Mark I or II. Accustomed to fame and glory, he seems to expect parades and celebrations for his deeds. Despite all this going for him, though, his career had started going downhill thanks to his problem drinking; he was saved from shame or retirement only by being kidnapped by Sin.

Despite his ego, Jecht has a lot of positive qualities: he's generally a helpful, decent man in action. During the course of Braska's pilgrimage, he often dragged the Summoner and Auron into helping out in various situations by insisting it was the "right thing to do". Along the way he took numerous videos (spheres) of the trip, intending to show his wife and son them when he got back to Zanarkand; when he realizes that he never will, he continues to do so, leaving them in the hopes that someday his son will see them. At the end of the journey, his desire to help the world, coupled with the knowledge that he can never go home again, lead him to essentially sacrifice himself, becoming Braska's Final Aeon so Spira can know a few precious years of peace.

That problem drinking that had spoiled his life and was infamous enough that even the people in Spira who knew him picked up on it? He quits cold-turkey after one idiotic mistake which caused his friend Braska hardship; he realizes he's shaming not only Braska, but his wife and son as well. From that day onward he never touches a bottle again.

All bets are off when it comes to his son, though. Jecht is, quite frankly, a terrible parent. Somewhere along the line he got the impression that the right way to raise a child is to belittle that child so he decides to toughen up and prove Jecht wrong. Jecht routinely berates and abuses Tidus, telling him he's a crybaby and will never be anywhere near as good at anything as Jecht is. He... means well, but it's still pretty horrible. Jecht believes in his son, though; he honestly expects the best out of Tidus. He just can't express any of these sentiments. The closest he can come is telling Tidus, in a sphere, "You're my son" -- which means a lot from Jecht, given how he sees himself, but then he immediately gives up on saying any more with a muttered, "I'm no good at these things."

CR-AU: Thanks to an error with space-time magic, Jecht appeared in the Tenscore Kingdoms, and along with others who had done the same (called the Sundered), was enrolled in Diatu Magicademy to keep his magical potential from detonating him or worse. Jecht was profoundly confused about this and absolutely determined not to think about it, viewing it as a second chance that he would utterly waste if he got too philosophical or deep into it. He was placed in House Ka, the recently-unbanned house that studied the recently-unbanned magic that had caused this mess, and again he refused to think of why.

A terrible student, Jecht tended to blow off classes and fail to study or practice properly. He was much more interested in the sport of bala-inlota, a sport that can best be described as "win through ANY MEANS POSSIBLE" (the local team once won by magically modifying their opponent's score to a nonsense word), and which Jecht excelled at by virtue of hard training, sports experience, and a willingness to play much more physically than most wizards expected.

Shortly after arriving, Jecht made common cause with one Yotsuyu goe Brutus, who had also come there after what should have been death, and was also an attractive woman in his age group. She proved his salvation by dragging him to class and helping him study, while he did his best to keep her from getting too philosophical about her life and her past in turn. Jecht spent a lot of time flirting with her but not doing anything more serious, thinking Yotsuyu would rather ask than be asked, which really complicated everyone's life since another person was also getting romantically confused over her. Ultimately nothing came of that, though that was more by virtue of the game cutting off at that canon point than anything else.

Besides girls and bala-inlota, Jecht also had to deal with the appearance of Tidus. One day the boy just showed up, transported much the same way he had, and father and son immediately and unsurprisingly failed to have any meaningful conversation whatsoever. Jecht continued to fumble any semblance of affection while Tidus dodged the issue as best he could. The two managed to communicate only through the means of bala-inlota, challenging each other and vowing that each would be the best. Tidus didn't stay long, unfortunately, and Jecht chose to look at the boy's vanishing as a good thing -- he had a life to live and a girl to get back to. Again, Jecht continued to deliberately not think of things.

Not long before canonpoint, a shadow event did force Jecht to come to terms with the fact that he was still, in no small part, Braska's Final Aeon. He reluctantly acknowledged it, accepted that he couldn't hide from it, then immediately went back to ignoring it as soon as possible. Some people...

Physical description: Jecht is a tall, well-muscled man with perpetually tanned skin and an absurd number of scars. He has a huge tattoo of his blitz team's symbol on his chest down to his abdomen. Shirts and shoes appear to be foreign concepts to him.

Meta Powers

If supplied with pyreflies, which are normally native only to Spira, Jecht takes on the form a Braska's Final Aeon -- a huge, monstrous version of himself. In this form he is incredibly resilient and strong, and possess the power to fire petrifying beams, make massive attacks, and hurl meteors around. The exact effects are tied to game mechanics, so for purpose of RP they become primarily stylistic.

Jecht can also hold his breath for ridiculously long times.

Earth AU

Earth AU Name: Jecht Zankander.
Earth AU Age: 36

History: Jecht lived the life of a stereotypical jock growing up: he got middling grades, ran with an aggressive crowd, and got the fame and regard of the local community for his contributions to victory at the halfback position. Maybe not quite so much as the quarterback, but hey, that's how it goes. Already at this age, Jecht developed a natural flair for showmanship, as well as his inclinations to hide all his training and act like he was just naturally that good.

From there, he followed a typical path: football scholarship, a couple years of college football, and then into the draft. Picked up by the Vikings, he quickly fought his way to the starting lineup, accruing fame and fortune over the course of the next several years.

Somehow, Jecht managed not to screw up his personal life during all this, primarily by virtue of not having much of one. Early in his high-school career he developed a profound aversion to alcohol after making an ass of himself, and seeing how others made asses of themselves, under its influence. Though he had girlfriends here and there across his career, none of them ever really lasted. Jecht also never felt the obligation to "live the life" through buying giant mansions and expensive cars; his showmanship was purely for the fans, not his peers. His greatest expenses came for his family -- he DID feel an obligation to provide for his parents, who had always supported him and encouraged him to follow his dreams. Of course, he kept himself in comfort, big TV and nicest bed and all that; he was just comfortable in smaller domains than a giant mansion with a gold-plated pool or whatnot.

After about six storied years, though, Jecht's play began to fall off. In small part, age was becoming more relevant, but mostly he'd just started to believe his own hype too much. Though he wouldn't admit it, the sudden passing of his father from cancer also hit him very hard. His training slacked, along with his performance, and as it slipped he became less relevant to the team. When at last he was traded, rather cheaply, to the Detroit Lions, Jecht slipped into depression, and for the next few years he was basically a nonentity in the world of professional football. Age continued to tick up, his conditioning fell off, and he saw basically no play during this time. His mother also passed during this, which did absolutely nothing for his energy levels. Soon enough, the team was considering cutting him.

The sheer indignity of the idea that he might leave football on anyone's terms but his own sparked rebellion in Jecht. Finding his old drive and energy again, he threw himself back in to training and practice, determined to reclaim his old heights. So what if he was older? So long as he had strength left in his body, he was gonna play, damn it!

A lucky break -- for him -- with injuries saw him on the field again, where he put up a much better performance than he had in quite a while. The Lions at least started thinking they could get a trade advantage from him, and so after a little while, he got passed over to the New York Giants.

So here's modern Jecht: just coming to NYC, determined to return to stardom no matter the obstacles in front of him.

Personality: Even more so than canon, Jecht wants the world to revolve around him -- he never got the sobering knockdown of Spira, nor the responsibility of having a child, and so he addresses the world on the basis of what it means to him and he means to it. That basis is almost entirely football, where he expects to be king and be treated as king. Interestingly, that never manifested as a desire to play quarterback, which is of course the star position -- Jecht wants to play and be renowned on his own terms, which happen to include less cerebral play calculation and more action deep in the thick of the offense. That attitude was rewarded and reinforced since the very beginning, and is also responsible for his greatest failings; when he stopped doing the work he needed to do to be that center of the universe, he fell out of it, and into a spiral downwards. The connection is not as clear-cut as it seems; Jecht knows he's good, but the important thing is that the fans believe it. When he loses sight of that connection, he fails, and only recently has he come to a more mature understanding of what he needs to do to properly ground himself.

So long as he's thinking clearly (for him), though, Jecht has a determination and will greater than that of his canon counterpart. In canon he went through a similar slump and determination to return, but the narrower world of dream Zanarkand meant being the center of the world was a lot easier. Jecht here has a much greater mountain to climb back up, with far more competition to get in his way, and so has a greater drive to back up his dreams.

That being said, Jecht remains terrible at dealing with complexity, again thanks in large part to his much narrower personal life. Without a serious love or a child, Jecht has less maturity and less experience dealing with problems. This is why in canon, it took alcohol abuse to diminish his skill and ability, while this Jecht slumped hard as just part of a vicious cycle in which he underperformed, got less fame and renown, and lost motivation to perform properly. In addition, he wasn't able to properly handle the passing of his parents, which added still more weight to his burdens and helped push him down.

His innate goodness has showed up much less, but still exists; if confronted with an ethical challenge, Jecht will pick the Right Thing to Do rather than the easiest or least complicated path. He's shunned performance-enhancing drugs on the basis of it not being what the fans want out of a player, and a great deal of his drive to be the best is for the sake of the fans -- making them happy, making them cheer, making them keep coming back, rather than playing just for himself.

As noted, only recently has Jecht refined his understanding of himself and his goals, and mustered the willpower and conviction to return to the top despite every barrier in front of him. For so much of his life, Jecht never met with failure; only just now has he truly grappled with it and begun to overcome it. Jecht is entering a new phase of maturity that he's neither familiar with nor entirely certain how to handle,

All that being the case, Jecht remains cheerful, good-natured, and a little arrogant (and appearing to be much more so).

Physical description: Essentially the same. Less scarred, the tattoo is less stylized and more just a straight J, and he doesn't exhibit quite the same pathological aversion to shirts and shoes.

Your Characters 'Event Memory'? Next to him, Auron chops through a turtle-like fiend, while Jecht kicks a plant-like fiend down to the ground. Both dissipate in a flurry of pyreflies.

"I didn't even have a chance," Braska said from behind them, chuckling lightly.

"There's a lot more of the Highroad left," replied Auron. "You will."

Jecht grunted, looking down the long plains in front of them. "Still say this'd be a perfect place for a parade."

Anything else? /shrug!
